As trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, removing them for biofuel production may result in an increase of net greenhouse gases instead of a decrease, a process known as indirect land use change (ILUC).

These limitations are based on concerns about the impact of ILUC. This project aims to demonstrate that biofuels can be produced with a low risk of such effects. The goal is to develop and test a methodology that could be used for low ILUC-risk certification of any type of biofuel feedstock project.
